Yoga Nidra, or yogic sleep is a way for you to access consciously the unconscious mind as you travel progressiveely through deeper layers of your body. You will move from the outermost layer (gross sensations) to the innermost layer (subtle sensations). 

As you move through the journey of unravelling the 5 layers or sheaths, known as the 5 koshas, you will begin to allow the layers to become transparent and light instead of dense and dark.

The journey will take you from layer to layer as if peeling an onion to get to the root, or the center of your being.

It is highly recommended to do this just before bed time - especially for those who are suffering from insomnia, adrenal fatigue and those who have high stress levels. The experience will down regulate your nervous system and help you move into a state of the parasympathetic nervous system, where recovery and healing can take place.

You will experience your most inner layer by going in and through each sheath. Layer by layer, you will relax, restore and rejuvenate your cells and your entire system.

When taken the time to do this practice, you will harmonize and balance all your layers and arrive into a state of deep surrender. 

The 5 layers/koshas you will be working with are:

1. Physical Layer: Annamaya Kosha - The first layer of consciousness consists of the physical (or “food”) body. It includes the muscles, bones, connective tissue, organs, and skin.

2. Energetic Layer: Pranamaya Kosha - The second layer of experience consists of subtle body energy, or the elements that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Breath and prana (life force energy) are part of this layer.

3. Mental/Emotional Layer: Manomaya Kosha - Thoughts and emotions make up the third layer of being. Most people only consciously operate in these first three layers.

4. Intuitive/Wisdom Layer: Vijnanamaya Kosha - The fourth layer is comprised of intuition and wisdom. In it lies the ability to connect to higher knowing, to follow intuitive impulses, and see the bigger picture beyond logic.

5. Bliss Layer: Anandamaya Kosha - Finally, the fifth layer is the quiet place of peace, love and joy and bliss which lives right at the center of your being. When operating from the anandamaya kosha, you experience a sense of presence and oneness among all beings.
